The Mantelpiece Dwellers

Who are these people,

The mantelpiece dwellers,

Sitting there in judgment,

Witnessing our lives.

Are they content,

Sitting silently by,

All the while watching,

Frozen in time.

I do not envy you,

Posed there for all to see,

Grasping at futility,

Generations removed.

When I am gone,

Give me the comfort of a drawer,

And let me go.

Keep the mantelpiece for the living.
